Haematology StaffThe entire staff of the Haematology team is available to you and your family, to meet whatever need you may have at any particular time. Although there will be one haematologist in charge of your child's care, you will probably meet all of them at some point, either when your child comes for check-ups at the clinic or when the child is hospitalised. There is a haematologist on call 24 hours a day, in case you have any concerns or problems; he/she can be reached through the hospital paging system. A nurse will be assigned to your family. The nurses are present in the clinic to administer your child's treatment, but a large part of their work is to help you cope with the impact of cancer on your family. They have a role in teaching and are concerned with the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Your primary nurse can be reached at any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., from Mondays to Fridays, via the hospital paging system. A social worker may be an integral part of the team, and if so, is available to your family for support and for helping to sort out financial difficulties if necessary. The psychiatrist and the psychologist on the team are available for consultation by both the staff and the families. The child life worker is present in the waiting room area of the haematology clinic and is also available for consultation. He/she assesses and discusses the child's behaviour with the family and team, and promotes healthy adaptation to the illness through medical play and other planned activities. |
