Sweet life for Kirkland

Sian Bradwell Tourney Team Kirkland 9 Dolce Vita 2

Team effort: Three players from Team Dolce Vita crowds second base to get the out.

It was an all-Kirkland final in the men’s 35 and over division at the 18th annual Sian Bradwell Softball Tournament last Sunday afternoon at Meades Park.

Team Kirkland took a 9-2 decision over their Dolce Vita rivals to earn the bragging rights for this year.

“They hit and we didn’t,” Neil Semenchuk of Dolce Vita said. “They also played solid in the field.”

Team Kirkland had a handle on the hitting, building each inning to pad their lead while it appeared as if the Dolce Vita squad was going to be shut out with the score 9-0  in the top of the ninth.

“We played a strong positional game to keep them off the bases,” Derek Dooley of Team Kirkland said.

It was in their last at bats when Dolce Vita staged a mini-comeback but it was too little too late. Semenchuk stretched a single into a double in his turn at the plate and then scored on Pierre Huppe’s blast to right center for a home run, making it a 9-2 contest.

“It was nice to win the event,” Dooley said. “But the important thing is to participate and help make the tournament a success in raising money for the Sian Bradwell Fund.”

Sharon and Ken Bradwell, who founded this event 18 years ago can’t believe how the volunteers have kept this event flourishing.

“We’ve been gone (to Ontario) for nine years,” Sharon said. “I feared this (tournament) would have faded away. Thanks to the tireless work of the volunteers for the softball and basketball (West Island Lakers) the oncology wards of the Children’s Hospital have continued to benefit from the fundraising efforts of the team here in Quebec.”
